I’ve been riding this bus for 4 years straight and have never had a problem going from Tallahassee to West Palm Beach. I pay attention to what I’m doing and I leave the drivers alone. Everyone that has a problem should try it! Great service RedCoach! Especially for college students.

I’ll be envious every time I fly from now on

Really enjoyed my ride. Bus and driver were great. The seats are very large and provide plenty of support / comfort (I’ll be envious every time I fly from now on). WiFi was stable the entire ride and I was able to charge by PC and phone with the available outlet. I’ll definitely consider this option anytime I need to head south, going forward.

Excellent

Passengers travel in style on luxury buses

Riding With RedCoach

When you want to get somewhere in the northeast, hopping a train is always an option. In California, cheap flights are fairly plentiful. If you want to travel around Florida, though, your options are limited. Amtrak covers the east coast of the state just twice a day, and at relatively odd hours, leaving the west coast uncovered. Flights into American’s hub in Miami are easy enough, even from as close as Orlando, thanks to the need to reposition foreign visitors from their Miami arrival point to the Magic Kingdom. If you’re looking to go elsewhere in the state, though, the solution is almost always to drive.

Though Governor Rick Scott put the kibosh on a high speed rail project the federal government wanted to fund within the state, even this option would have connected only Miami, Orlando and Tampa, leaving the Tallahassee, Fort Myers and Jacksonville areas out in the cold. Just about 2.5 hours’ drive from Orlando, Jacksonville is far enough from the center of the state that enough trips will leave you craving a better solution than burning a tank of gas following the tiresome route of I-95 to I-4, but close enough and too thinly traveled to seriously entertain the thought of connecting flights. Jacksonville to Tallahassee is even worse: just a little longer than Jacksonville to Orlando by a watch’s objective measure, the trip seems to take days with nothing but endless trees lining I-10 for most of the drive.

And so it is: Florida’s most populous city, the largest city by landmass in North America, is cut off from the rest of the state because driving’s just a bit too convenient to merit any substantial improvement. Into this environment comes RedCoach, a new, luxury bus service seeking to ease the pain of yawn-inducing jaunts throughout Florida.

Luxury bus service might sound like an oxymoron, but RedCoach makes a fair case: its “First Class” buses have just 27 seats, in a 2×1 configuration. These are wide, plush chairs with a tremendous level of recline and a leg-rest that pulls into position from the seat ahead. Standard power outlets can be found ever couple rows, and RedCoach offers free Wi-Fi on its flights…errr, drives. RedCoach offers service throughout the state, finally offering a way to get from Jacksonville to Orlando without driving. As Orlando is RedCoach’s hub, you may continue on from there to a variety of other destinations. In the Orlando area, that means a fleet of shuttles ready to whisk you to any of the major hotels at Walt Disney World, Universal Studios, International Drive or Kissimmee, or even out to Port Canaveral’s cruise ships for a measly $5 up-charge.

I rode with RedCoach to Orlando and back for a 24 hour trip last week to see if riding the bus was really more convenient than simply driving myself and was surprised with what I found:

Booking A Trip With RedCoach

Since service to Jacksonville is still new, RedCoach is offering promotional routes as low as $19 roundtrip between Jacksonville and Orlando. It’s possible to book both nonrefundable and refundable tickets, with a few dollars’ discount offered for nonrefundable options.
Tickets may be booked in advance at www.redcoachUSA.com. When booking your tickets, you may reserve your seat just like you would for a flight, choosing from an overhead map.

Due to some personal scheduling issues, I ended up booking two one-way tickets for $14 a piece rather than a roundtrip all at once, but this was still a fraction of what I’d’ve shelled out for gas driving myself.

Jacksonville to Orlando on RedCoach

I arrived at the Jacksonville station about 15 minutes prior to departure, a nice change from the 60-90 minute departure cushion you’d need at minimum for a flight. The only security screening was double-checking my ID for a match on the manifest; no TSA Pre-Check needed!

The seat was perfectly comfortable, and certainly a far cry from a school bus or even more standard commercial charter. The leg-rest that pulls back from the seat ahead seems a little weird at first blush, but is actually a great touch. I worked for most of the ride down, taking advantage of the free Wi-Fi onboard. There was a power outlet just behind my seat, so I didn’t drain any battery power on my MacBook during the trip. Wi-Fi would come and go at times, but mostly in spots where Iknew cellular signal was weak for my own devices. So long as the signal remained strong, speeds were better than the type of pitiful bandwidth often seen at hotels for a charge, so it’s difficult to complain.

The ride itself was smooth and quiet. The bus only had about eight passengers, most content to kick back for a short nap. After working for most of the 2.5 hour drive, I decided to kick back for a few minutes, too. The seat’s recline is exceedingly generous, more akin to a recliner at home than a bus seat.

Sure, this might not be a fully-flat Business Class seat on Cathay Pacific, but for the relatively short ride, it was perfect for a quick nap. Because service is point-to-point, we arrived about 15 minutes early at the RedCoach station in Orlando, a short distance from Orlando’s main airport (MCO). I had a ride waiting and a car to borrow while in town, so I was in business as soon as we pulled up to the station.

A Word For The Locals

RedCoach just began offering service to Jacksonville recently, to both its hub in Orlando and to Tallahassee. The bus picks up from 1003 Kings Ave, better known as the Kings Avenue Skyway Station. If you happen to live downtown, this is convenient. If not, the biggest challenge of a trip on RedCoach might be getting to the station. While JTA buses run to this stop, Jacksonville’s bus system leaves much to be desired in terms of convenience and practicality. An Uber ride cost me nothing thanks to a couple free ride credits.

Otherwise, it would’ve cost me $21 each way to take UberX from the St. John’s Town Center to the station in minimal traffic. I look forward to investigating parking options near the Kings Avenue stop or another Skyway station for future trips. However, it’s important to remember the Skyway doesn’t offer regular service on weekends. Your best bet is to hitch a ride with a family member or friend.

Final Thoughts

While RedCoach addresses the city-to-city pain point of traveling in Florida, the company can’t begin to fix the dreadful mass transit situation within cities like Jacksonville and Orlando. Simply getting to and from the stations can be enough of a pain to negate much of the convenience of being whisked 95% of the distance in comfort. If I were visiting one of the theme parks or heading out to Port Canaveral for acruise, though, I wouldn’t hesitate to take advantage of RedCoach again. As for the more painful Tallahassee drive? For that one, RedCoach can have my
business every time.

Luxury buses scooping up more passengers

0
0

Jill Pack popped her seat back, took a handful of potato chips out of her box of snacks, cast a languid gaze at Queen Latifah and Dolly Parton singing and dancing up on the TV screen, and pronounced her verdict: In all her years of traveling to see her relatives in Port St. Lucie, driving had never been like this before.

“I never thought I‟d say this, but the bus is a really nice option,” she said. Pack, a 46-year-old flight attendant from Chicago taking advantage of a South Florida layover to visit her family, is the latest convert to Miami-based RedCoach, a luxury bus service that‟s on the cutting edge of what transportation experts say is a renaissance in bus travel.

“This is a new generation of bus service,” says Robert Poole, director of transportation policy at the Reason Foundation think tank. “The growth in the past four to seven years has been phenomenal.” Spurred on by passengers weary of the security hassles at airports in the post-9/11 world and anxious to stay wired to their cellphones and laptop computers while in transit, bus travel is growing four times as fast as airlines and nearly eight times as fast as railroads.
From cut-rate, nameless lines serving ethnic niches (known in the industry as “Chinatown buses” because that‟s their most popular market) to streamlined commuter companies offering express service between cities on the upper East Coast, buses are taking back a big chunk of a travel market that they once dominated.

“The stigma that was long associated with bus travel has finally lifted, completely,” says Joseph Schwieterman, who studies transportation at DePaul Univeristy‟s Chaddick Institute for Metropolitan Development.
“You‟re seeing passengers riding buses now who would never have set foot in a Greyhound coach 20 years ago.”

Not so long ago, the industry‟s dominant image was that of Dustin Hoffman as the seedy, tubercular pimp Ratso Rizzo, dying in the back of an overcrowded bus from New York to Miami at the end of Midnight Cowboy.<

That‟s a sharp contrast with RedCoach‟s first-class buses, which feature roomy leather seats (just 27 in a coach built to hold 56) that recline into beds, on-board movies and free wi-fi service. “To get somebody out of a car, which offers so much freedom of scheduling, you have to give them a good reason, and I think we do,” RedCoach vice president Florencia Cirigliano says.

RedCoach, which stops at the Miami airport, has been in the luxury-bus business in Argentina for 20 years. It launched in Florida in 2010 after Cirigliano and her parents, vacationing in Miami, discovered that a side trip to Orlando would force them to either spend exorbitantly on airline tickets or rent a car and negotiate Florida‟s unfamiliar and crowded freeways for several hours.

“We were surprised at how few options there were,” the 29-year-old Cirigliano says. “In Argentina, we have 40 million people and 20,000 buses. The business for buses is huge. Every town has a big bus station the size of Union Station in Washington, D.C. We didn‟t see why that couldn‟t work here.

”It wasn‟t easy—many RedCoach buses in those early days carried just one or two passengers. (And even earlier this month, a Herald reporter traveling mid-week from Fort Pierce to Miami was the only one aboard.) “We lost a lot of money at first, a lot,” Cirigliano says.
But an aggressive combination of cut-rate fares (at one point, as little as $20 for a round trip between Miami and Orlando) and visits to county fairs and other events wherecrowds were invited to climb aboard and inspect the luxuriant seats expanded RedCoach‟s business at a rapid pace. Originally less than an asterisk in Florida‟s transportation system, operating a single bus between Miami and Orlando, RedCoach now operates a fleet of 15 vehicles linking 11 Florida cities, from Naples to Jacksonville. Though the days of dirt-cheap fares are gone (a first-class round trip between Miami and Orlando now costs $80 to $100, aboutdouble the fare on conventional bus lines), the company expects to carry 100,000 passengers this year, a 35 percent increase from last.

Nearly half of RedCoach‟s passengers are college students, traveling home on weekends from the big college campuses in Gainesville, Tallahassee and Orlando. Another quarter are businessmen. Those a re the same two groups groups spurring the growth in bus travel around the rest of the country. Both are attracted by the same thing: the opportunity for almost unlimited use of cellphones, computers and other electronic gadgets, which are restricted on airlines and often don‟t work very well on trains because they often travel through remote areas far from phone towers. Even the most bar -bones bus these days is likely to have wi-fi service and power outlets.

“Bus travelers use technology much more intensively than those on trains and planes,” DePaul‟s Schwieterman says. “The bus seat becomes an extension of their office. … Time in a bus has suddenly become a billable hour.” Polina Raygorodskaya started traveling by bus while commuting between Boston, where she was attending college, and New York, where she had founded a fashion-industry public relations company. “It wasn‟t that I couldn‟t afford other forms of travel, I was making money,” she says.

“It was buses worked better with my schedule—I could always get a bus ticket at the last minute if something changed—and I wasn‟t losing a day of work every time I traveled because I could get so much done on the bus.” Her fondness for bus travel eventually turned into a business itself. Five years ago with a friend, she created the Boston-based wanderu.com, a one-stop shopping site that allows customers to collect schedules and prices from 28 different bus companies, then purchase tickets with a single click.

“We‟re up to nearly a million searches a month,” the 28-year- old Raygorodskaya says,“and the vast majority of our customers are millennials. When you talk about an older generation of people who grew up with bus travel as it used to be, it‟s not considered cool. This generation, which is what‟s moving bus travel forward, thinks it‟s really cool.” Bus travel may never have been cool, exactly, but it was once the most popular long-distance travel option in America.

“Between 1930 and 1965, you could go literally anywhere on a bus,” Schwieterman says. “Every little town in America had a bus stop.” But the 1970s brought big changes in the way Americans traveled. Auto registrations doubled every year of the decade, while the 1978 deregulation of airlines sent plane fares plummeting. “By 1980, bus travel had acquired a real stigma,” Schwieterman says.

Most observers think the bus revival began in 2008 with the American arrival of the British company Megabus, which launched discount express service in the Midwest. (It has since expanded into California, the upper Northeast and, five months ago, Florida.) Megabus was soon followed by Boltbus, a competitor with similar service and routes, owned by Greyhound. Around the same time, Greyhound —the only remaining national bus company inAmerica, with 3,800 stops acros sthe continental United States and Canada—began amajor upgrade of its vehicles, adding legroom, wi-fi and electric sockets like the other companies.

“We‟ve done a great deal to transform our brand, from new mobile websites to onboard amenities,” Greyhound spokeswoman Lanesha Gipson says. “We‟ve improved an onboard experience that‟s still safe, reliable and affordable.” But instead of carving up ever-smaller pieces of the same passenger pie, all the newcompetitors have expanded the bus-service market. Precise numbers are hard to come by because no federal agency collects statistics on bus travel, but Schwieterman estimates interstate buses carry about 70 million passengers a year.
“That‟s way fewer than the airlines, but way more than the trains,” he says. “It‟s a forceto be reckoned with.”

RedCoach‟s traffic doesn‟t count toward that total, because none of its routes stretch across Florida‟s borders—yet.
“We want to add a few more cities within the state, butfor sure we plan to go outside Florida,” Cirigliano says. “The business has expanded much faster than we expected.”
So fast, in fact, that it triggered a domestic crisis. Her parents liked their 2010 visit to Florida so much that they bought a vacation condo here. Cirigliano used it when she came for the RedCoach launch, expecting to stay a few weeks. Four years later, she‟s still there, along with a husband and, any day now, a baby.
“My mother was furious,” she recalls. “She told my father, „You promised me a condo for vacations, not to move my daughter out of the country.‟ But so far, they‟re still married.”

Baggage YES, baggage NO

Make our luggage fine looks very easy, but it’s not. If we are going on vacations for more than a week, we should be very careful with the way we can store and organize our clothes and belongings in our suitcase.

If we achieve to make a good choice, we will spend the week with a cool look, but if not, we will return home like children in summer camps.

We also need to note that in Florida we should carry the less luggage possible, because in cities like Miami and Orlando we will find the best outlets in the world, where your can find amazing clothes and accesories at incredibly low prices.

If you for a ticket to ride with RedCoach, you can carry for free two bags per person, and one carry on bag. That’s why we give your this tips for your travel, so you can not only travel comfortable in a luxury bus, but also save money if you have conections with national or international flights.

1- Choose a small necessaire

Often, the necessaire is what occupies most space in the luggage (especially for women). If you want to avoid the excess, choose a necessaire which can fit in you hand luggage without taking up much space (remember that you need to dispatch it in your flight), and choose only what fits into it. Try to minimize the content as much as you can, starting with the essential stuff, and then you can use the space left to carry some extra things.

2- Don’t carry any travel guide

You can read the travel guide before the departure, when you are organizing the trip. This way, you can make a summary of the places you plan to visit, or make photocopies of the pages you are most interested in, which you can discard as days go by. Also, now there are several digital travel guides that you can download in your cellphone and don’t need any space.

3- Wear the most voluptuous

The day of your flight you can wear the clothes, shoes and accesories that can bulge and weighing the most. You can algo carry jackets or sweaters in your hands, and make sure to carry in your pockets things like your camera, cellphone, travel documents, souvenirs, etc.)

4- Wrap your clothes

On the effort to save space, we will do whatever is in our hands. A good idea is to wrap your clothes. Believe it or not, this will save you a lot of space, and also your clothes will not end rumpled. Also, try to make everything fit perfectly, trying to occupy all the space (without leaving air gaps)

5- Choose wisely the colors of your clothes

If you want to look good, and be always fashionable and combined; choose the clothes with austere colors that can be easily combined. This way, you can carry less clothes and combine the pieces to always wear different sets.

6- Be careful with the footwear

Shoes and slippers are what occupies more space in your suitcase. Also, just like with your clothes, you need to be careful when choosing. Try to choose comfortable and combinable footwear.

How do you save money with RedCoach?

0
0

“The way to wealth depends primarily in just two words: Work and frugality”. This words belong to Benjamin Franklin, one of the founding fathers of the US back in the eighteenth century. In RedCoach we take this statement very seriously. We work every day to provide the best service, but we also think of our passengers and their need to save money.

As everyone knows, saving is a part of money we keep, to spend when needed later. Saving is very important, and traveling in buses with cheap fares is a good way to save. But often, we don’t want to give up comfort, schedules or quality of service.

RedCoach is the first luxury bus company in Florida, and throughout the United States! While we know that there are cheaper companies as Greyhound or Megabus, we give you some some tips for traveling with the comfort and luxury of RedCoach, but with very cheap fares.

SAVING TIPS

– If you travel on Wednesdays and Saturdays, in any of our services, in any route (except for Jacksonville, which always has very convenient prices), you can save 15% compared to any other day of the week.

– If you are traveling with a child under 7 years old, the child will have a 15% discount over the total purchase.

– Senior citizens over 62 years old have a 10% discount, over any of our rates.

– In the Route Between Orlando-Miami, If you travel with a friend, familiar or colleague and make the purchase for the same service, same day, same route, and in one transaction, you automatically get a 10% discount. If you are traveling with two other partners, you get a 15% discount; and you will not believe this: if you travel with 3 other passengers (ie 4 or more persons together) you will get a 20% discount in the total purchase.

– If you are a Student and you registered your student ID in our website, once it is approved you get a 10% discount on your purchase in all routes (regardless if you are using it to travel from the University to visit your family, or if you are having a weekend with your friends in Disney).

-If your final destination is far from our station or stop, don’t spend lots of money on a taxi! RedCoach can take you to your final location  for an additional minimum starting at $13 per person (only applies to certain areas of Miami, Orlando and Jacksonville).

– If you need to buy a Round-trip, do it all together in the same transaction and the system will automatically apply at least a 10% discount.

– If you are completely sure of your travel date and time, you can buy the NON-REFUNDABLE NO-CHANGES fare, and you will save 5% over the STANDARD fare, and 10% over the REFUNDABLE. But remember, this fare is NON REFUNDABLE, and it cannot be cancelled or changed; so if you can’t travel on the day you choose, your lose your ticket. Also, we suggest you to buy ahead of time (we recommend at least 2 or 3 weeks), since the seats in that fare are limited.

What is the good thing on these discounts? They are cumulative. Yes, all the discounts described above can be accumulated. Let’s see a couple of examples:

– Traveling in the route Tallahasse-Tampa, on a Friday Business Service, you would pay $60 with the Standard Fare. But if, for example, you travel the next day (Saturday), and pay the Non-Refundable fare, you pay $47. If you are also a student you have an additional $10% off, then you would pay $42. And if you want to save even more, buy the round trip. Of course, you think you have to pay $42 for the first leg, and $42 for the return leg, but NO: instead of paying $84 for your ride, buying the round trip you will get at least an extra 10% discount, and you would be paying $74, which would make $37 each leg. If you compare with the original $60 one-way, you are getting a 40% discount… that’s a lot of money, isn’t it?

– Now, let’s say you are traveling from Miami to Orlando with your 4 members family, to spend some days on Disney. If you travel on a Friday in a First Class Service, a one-way ticket with the Standard Fare would be $69. If you choose to travel on a Saturday, it would be $55 instead. Also, if there were a senior citizen and a child, they would have 10% and 15% discount, respectively. That would make the senior ticket $49, and the child ticket $46. Supposing the other 2 passengers were adults, it would make a total of $205, which is a good saving… but there is more! For being 4 passengers traveling together, you would have an extra 20% discount!. Then, the trip for the 4 passengers would be only $164, making a final price of $41 for each passenger. If you compare it to the initial price of $69 each ticket, you would be saving 40%! Isn’t it perfect to save money on family vacations?

If you are looking to travel comfortable, with the best seats you can imagine, and save money, then RedCoach is your best choice!

Ten tips to make your trip become THE TRIP

0
0

¿Do you want to optimize time, money and comfort? Everything counts to make your trip unforgettable. How do we travel in a smart way? Practice these travel tips.

1- Plan your trip

It is important to plan your trip, this is the best way to save money and time. The more your know your destination before arriving there, the more you will enjoy the experience. Buy travel guides or download them in your phone (which you can do using Wi-Fi).

2- Travel when everyone else is working

When your job allows it, it’s convenient to travel outside of the holiday season, mainly school holidays. Prices are more accessible and destinations are much less crowded. BEWARE! Not all the destinations have  the same seasons. It’s good to choose seasons where the weather is not extreme, not too hot and neither too cold.

3- Don’t look for massive places, but the ones that you really like

It’s hard to visit Disney and not to take a picture with the famous castle, right? Or being in Tampa and not to ride the famous Busch Gardens roller coasters! Don’t follow the crowd, remember that travelling is a very personal experience, and the best is to follow your own taste.

4- Don’t travel with a lot of luggage

Carrying an industrial size backpack or suitcase is never recommended. In addition to how heavy it can result, there are many factors to consider:

  • Permitted weight by the airline (but in RedCoach we offer two suitcases and one carry-on for FREE)
  • If you travel in group, you will have to bring all that luggage in the car, which is very uncomfortable.
  • Bring only the necessary, and if it’s a long trip choose to wash your clothes while traveling.
  • Shampoo, and other personal hygiene products can be purchased in your destination.

5- Take advantage of the Points Programs

If you are a frequent traveler and you accumulate miles or points in airlines or hotels, don’t hesitate in using them. Normally it expires and it’s good to take advantage of their benefits. Get informed of loyalty programs, and all the options they offer to take in count at the moment of choosing a flight or hotel. RedCoach offers the RedRiders Program, every time you travel you accumulate points to earn a free trip.

6 – Use Wi-Fi

There is no excuse, now Wi-Fi is everywhere (restaurants, hotels, universities, theme parks, attractions, beaches). You can be in contact without wasting a cent.

7- Less countries, more cities and villages

You have 2 weeks on vacation and you want to visit Gainesville, Tallahassee, Miami, Orlando, West Palm Beach, Fort Lauderdale, Ocala, Tampa, within other stops… NO, NO, NO! Focus on what you are really interested, and choose your priorities. That way you will enjoy a lot more of your trip.

8- The Hotel: where saving money is not always important

The Hotel you will be staying is probably the most important decision in your trip. If you visit a city, make sure that the location is good, and preferable, that it had breakfast and Wi-Fi included. If you visit a beach, it’s worth to spend in a Hotel that has a good quality of services (like ALL INCLUSIVE services, or live shows).

9- Use coupons, discounts, credit card promos and become an expert!

A lot of attractions, restaurants and even hotels has promotions and discounts. Most of museums offer a day with free entrance one day in the month, and all of them have special discounts for students, seniors, etc. Search the websites of the places you want to visit and get informed. For example, in our website www.redcoachusa.com you will always find new offers to travel cheaper and with the best service quality (with reclining leather seats, and free Wi-Fi!).

10- Gifts for your friends, family, neighbors, etc.

Every time you travel you have… better said, you feel with the obligation of bringing a gift for every person that wishes you luck before the trip. Forget about it, to do this more pleasant and not having to carry a ton of souvenirs with you, call all your friends when you come back, invite them with a good beer, and tell them the best anecdotes while showing them the pictures… and everyone happy!

RedCoach USA Adds new route to service

The new route comes before the company’s high-demand season.

Miami, FL – Sept 2016 – RedCoach, the only luxury motor coach transportation service in Florida, announced that it has included a new route from Fort Lauderdale to the University of South Florida in Tampa. The route’s service will begin on Sept. 19 with rates as low as $15 on select dates.

The new route is an important addition to the service as Florida’s travel season is just around the corner. Travelers will be able to travel straight from the Fort Lauderdale–Hollywood International Airport to Tampa within four hours, as the route stops in Naples as well. With longer airport lines and expensive flights during the holidays, ground transportation has become optimal for short- and medium-distance trips.

“We have seen a demand in the market for this route in particular, which is why it was necessary to begin the service before the busy season,” stated Florencia Cirigliano, President of RedCoach, “it will allow both travelers and residents to the area to have the option to explore the west coast.”

RedCoach provides more amenities than any other motor coach service in the country.  The spacious buses feature 110v individual power outlets, oversized premium leather seats that recline into beds, and soon, on-demand movies available on personal devices. Additionally, each passenger is able to bring two suitcases up to 50 lbs. each– free of charge —as well as a carry-on bag.

RedCoach is the only luxury motor coach transportation service in Florida that offers first-class comfort without the high cost, long lines or hassle that comes with other forms of transportation. The service features 14 convenient stops in 10 of Florida’s most popular destinations.  The Argentina-based company launched its U.S. routes in May of 2010.  Since then, RedCoach has transported more than half a million passengers throughout Florida and has continued to grow, increasing its stops, services and passenger benefits. Why You May Want to Consider the Bus When Traveling in Florida

0

When you have a business trip in a city four hours away by car, there may be a few choices on how to get there. In my case, it was a meeting in Miami, four hours south of where I live in Orlando. Looking at my alternatives, flying out of Orlando is an option, as is driving my own car as well as taking a bus. No trains yet serve the two cities though this is in the planning stages.

On similar trips in the past, I have rotated between transportation options and have often regretted my choices. For example, on a recent flight from Fort Lauderdale, the aircraft had a multi-hour delay. Then the pilots timed out so our flight was cancelled for the night – “Sorry, come back tomorrow.” Due to a mass of disgruntled passengers, the airline ended up calling in a bus to get us to Orlando but that added another couple of hours. All in all, this 30-minute flight took 10 hours. Okay, nix that choice in the future since this was just one of many flight delays to and from South Florida.

On other trips, I have driven my own car. I love this option because I can stop where and when I want as well as pack whatever I desire. I’m fully in control of getting around but also responsible for staying alert and awake while driving this distance. Add in the often-heavy Florida afternoon rains and I’m frequently wishing that I hadn’t elected to drive. This option is a love-hate due to these various aspects, though lately has been winning over the flying.

On this trip, I bounced around both of these ideas. Airfares into Miami were running about $200 for the times I needed to fly and I would need to pay for transportation both ways between the airport and my hotel. Driving my car would cost about $60 including tolls but there would be another $40/day for hotel parking.

I then checked out the RedCoach bus service. They depart a few miles away from the Orlando airport and go directly to the Ft. Lauderdale and Miami airports. On the dates I needed, the round-trip fare was only $59 and this included a first-class seat on the drive south and a business class seat on the drive north. The only difference between the two is that first class means a single seat while business class means there are two seats side-by-side.

Adding in the $40 in ground transportation to get to/from my hotel and the cost is still less than driving my own car.  Also – and this is a BIG plus to me – they do the driving while I get to sit in a comfy wide leather seat with Wi-Fi while using my laptop. I can be productive for these eight hours of travel versus almost no productivity with the flight option and very limited productivity with the driving my own car option. I do use my car as my university-on-wheels as that’s where I listen to podcasts, cd’s and audiobooks on business and personal development.

SOLD! I’m going on the bus!

So how’d my bus trip go?

Outbound from Orlando, we left the station (which, by the way, is clean, has bathrooms, chairs and vending machines with snacks and drinks) about 20 minutes late due to a delayed incoming bus. The bus wasn’t full and many two-seaters had only one passenger. I had a first-class seat, one of nine on this bus with lots of leg room. There are power outlets in the odd-numbered rows so I reached behind my Row 8 seat and plugged my laptop into the outlet in Row 9. On the two-seat side, there are outlets next to every window. There are window screens to pull down if the sun is too glaring and a bathroom on the bus, which I’m happy I didn’t need to use. The bathroom may have been perfectly clean, but I can live without knowing.

The skies opened up on the drive south and the pouring rain made me very glad I was not behind the wheel of my own car. Florida rains can be brutal to drive through so I did do a little prayer to help keep our driver safe on the road. Once the rain cleared, it was smooth sailing. Two rest stop pull-ins to pick up and drop off any passengers (Ft. Pierce and West Palm Beach rest areas along the Florida Turnpike). Then it was onto Ft Lauderdale Airport and finally Miami. Four hours in total – and I got a lot of work done on their Wi-Fi which the driver said had recently been upgraded. My email wouldn’t download but that wasn’t a speed thing, as the speed of the service was great. It must’ve been something with the security or the ports and I didn’t want to fiddle with any of my settings that would have to be reset later. Any urgent emails got replied to from my phone. Also, no video streaming from their Wi-Fi, similar to airplane service.

Heading back home to Orlando, my driver from the hotel pulled up to the Miami airport (Terminal H, Door 21 at Departures) at 4:45pm right behind the bus that was due to leave at 5:00pm. Perfect timing! My luggage went into the hold of the bus and this time I took a business class seat. I had a two-seater all to myself so I took one seat and my laptop tote took the other. I actually like this better than the one-seater for having my stuff right next to me, so long as there’s not a person in the seat next to me. Heck, I like it when this happens on a plane, too!

I asked the driver what time dinner was served. He smiled and said “10:00pm” knowing full well that we would be back in Orlando well before that. Can’t hurt to have a little fun. And speaking of dinner, I brought my own. No hot food that would smell up the bus, instead protein bars that go with me on every trip. A bar and a bottle of water and I was happy with my meal. A couple of other folks had snacks, and thankfully no stinky food by anyone. It really was a very quiet group of passengers (on both legs of the trip, actually). I sat in peace in my little world of laptop, music and my snack, with an overhead light to see my documents, while other passengers reclined in their seats, turned off their lights and took a nap.

The bus arrived back into Orlando right on time – about 4 hours and 15 minutes after leaving Miami at rush hour. Not bad at all. And again I was able to be online, chatting with friends on Facebook and working on my business. It was much safer than driving in the dark along the Turnpike after a mentally-exhausting day. Oh, and once more I was able to skip the bus bathroom experience. Not saying it would be a bad one, but there was no reason to leave my little cocoon.

I had left my car in their parking lot for the duration of my trip. It was confusing as to where to leave the car because I didn’t see any signage on where to park or how to pay. I started off by parking in the drop-off zone, went into the RedCoach building and talked with the on-site rental car agency representative. I learned that they both rent cars and manage the parking lot. They previously told me over the phone that parking was around $5 per day but they ended up not charging me and I’m not sure why. Hey, don’t look a gift horse in the mouth, right?

Upon returning to the bus station, it was a dark walk to my car. Lighting isn’t that great and I was all alone on this walk. I should have gone into the RedCoach office and had someone escort me to my car. Instead, I called my husband and talked in a loud voice to him as I was walking so anyone lurking would know I wasn’t truly alone. Next time, I will ask for someone to walk with me. If you don’t leave a car overnight, it’s not an issue at all as their drop-off lot is very close to the RedCoach station door. Other stations throughout Florida may be different so best make a note to call RedCoach to find out your local station’s parking arrangements.

All in all it was a great experience. Next time you are traveling between cities in Florida or heading to one of the many universities that RedCoach services, consider the bus. It’s not the perfect answer all of the time but it’s a great choice when your origin and destination are both served by RedCoach. They also offer shuttle service to various hotels in some locales, or to the airport in the case of Orlando so ask about this as well.

RedCoach also offers a loyalty program. As a frequent flier, hotel stayer and car renter, I love my loyalty programs.

Since returning from this trip, I have told a lot of people who live throughout Florida (and even a visitor who was in Orlando and needed to get to Ft. Lauderdale for a meeting) about RedCoach. All are surprised to know that such a service exists, that it was such a great experience, and the reasonable cost.

So that you can give this bus service consideration when in Florida, I asked RedCoach for a discount code for us Smart Women Travelers and here it is, along with details:

Book your trip through RedCoachUSA.com and use the code SMARTWOMAN16 to receive your 10% discount. Valid to travel until October 31st 2017. Only available for web purchases.
