Luxury buses scooping up more passengers

0
0

Jill Pack popped her seat back, took a handful of potato chips out of her box of snacks, cast a languid gaze at Queen Latifah and Dolly Parton singing and dancing up on the TV screen, and pronounced her verdict: In all her years of traveling to see her relatives in Port St. Lucie, driving had never been like this before.

“I never thought I?d say this, but the bus is a really nice option,” she said. Pack, a 46-year-old flight attendant from Chicago taking advantage of a South Florida layover to visit her family, is the latest convert to Miami-based RedCoach, a luxury bus service that?s on the cutting edge of what transportation experts say is a renaissance in bus travel.

“This is a new generation of bus service,” says Robert Poole, director of transportation policy at the Reason Foundation think tank. “The growth in the past four to seven years has been phenomenal.” Spurred on by passengers weary of the security hassles at airports in the post-9/11 world and anxious to stay wired to their cellphones and laptop computers while in transit, bus travel is growing four times as fast as airlines and nearly eight times as fast as railroads.
From cut-rate, nameless lines serving ethnic niches (known in the industry as “Chinatown buses” because that?s their most popular market) to streamlined commuter companies offering express service between cities on the upper East Coast, buses are taking back a big chunk of a travel market that they once dominated.

“The stigma that was long associated with bus travel has finally lifted, completely,” says Joseph Schwieterman, who studies transportation at DePaul Univeristy?s Chaddick Institute for Metropolitan Development.
“You?re seeing passengers riding buses now who would never have set foot in a Greyhound coach 20 years ago.”

Not so long ago, the industry?s dominant image was that of Dustin Hoffman as the seedy, tubercular pimp Ratso Rizzo, dying in the back of an overcrowded bus from New York to Miami at the end of Midnight Cowboy.<

That?s a sharp contrast with RedCoach?s first-class buses, which feature roomy leather seats (just 27 in a coach built to hold 56) that recline into beds, on-board movies and free wi-fi service. “To get somebody out of a car, which offers so much freedom of scheduling, you have to give them a good reason, and I think we do,” RedCoach vice president Florencia Cirigliano says.

RedCoach, which stops at the Miami airport, has been in the luxury-bus business in Argentina for 20 years. It launched in Florida in 2010 after Cirigliano and her parents, vacationing in Miami, discovered that a side trip to Orlando would force them to either spend exorbitantly on airline tickets or rent a car and negotiate Florida?s unfamiliar and crowded freeways for several hours.

“We were surprised at how few options there were,” the 29-year-old Cirigliano says. “In Argentina, we have 40 million people and 20,000 buses. The business for buses is huge. Every town has a big bus station the size of Union Station in Washington, D.C. We didn?t see why that couldn?t work here.

”It wasn?t easy—many RedCoach buses in those early days carried just one or two passengers. (And even earlier this month, a Herald reporter traveling mid-week from Fort Pierce to Miami was the only one aboard.) “We lost a lot of money at first, a lot,” Cirigliano says.
But an aggressive combination of cut-rate fares (at one point, as little as $20 for a round trip between Miami and Orlando) and visits to county fairs and other events wherecrowds were invited to climb aboard and inspect the luxuriant seats expanded RedCoach?s business at a rapid pace. Originally less than an asterisk in Florida?s transportation system, operating a single bus between Miami and Orlando, RedCoach now operates a fleet of 15 vehicles linking 11 Florida cities, from Naples to Jacksonville. Though the days of dirt-cheap fares are gone (a first-class round trip between Miami and Orlando now costs $80 to $100, aboutdouble the fare on conventional bus lines), the company expects to carry 100,000 passengers this year, a 35 percent increase from last.

Nearly half of RedCoach?s passengers are college students, traveling home on weekends from the big college campuses in Gainesville, Tallahassee and Orlando. Another quarter are businessmen. Those a re the same two groups groups spurring the growth in bus travel around the rest of the country. Both are attracted by the same thing: the opportunity for almost unlimited use of cellphones, computers and other electronic gadgets, which are restricted on airlines and often don?t work very well on trains because they often travel through remote areas far from phone towers. Even the most bar -bones bus these days is likely to have wi-fi service and power outlets.

“Bus travelers use technology much more intensively than those on trains and planes,” DePaul?s Schwieterman says. “The bus seat becomes an extension of their office. … Time in a bus has suddenly become a billable hour.” Polina Raygorodskaya started traveling by bus while commuting between Boston, where she was attending college, and New York, where she had founded a fashion-industry public relations company. “It wasn?t that I couldn?t afford other forms of travel, I was making money,” she says.

“It was buses worked better with my schedule—I could always get a bus ticket at the last minute if something changed—and I wasn?t losing a day of work every time I traveled because I could get so much done on the bus.” Her fondness for bus travel eventually turned into a business itself. Five years ago with a friend, she created the Boston-based wanderu.com, a one-stop shopping site that allows customers to collect schedules and prices from 28 different bus companies, then purchase tickets with a single click.

“We?re up to nearly a million searches a month,” the 28-year- old Raygorodskaya says,“and the vast majority of our customers are millennials. When you talk about an older generation of people who grew up with bus travel as it used to be, it?s not considered cool. This generation, which is what?s moving bus travel forward, thinks it?s really cool.” Bus travel may never have been cool, exactly, but it was once the most popular long-distance travel option in America.

“Between 1930 and 1965, you could go literally anywhere on a bus,” Schwieterman says. “Every little town in America had a bus stop.” But the 1970s brought big changes in the way Americans traveled. Auto registrations doubled every year of the decade, while the 1978 deregulation of airlines sent plane fares plummeting. “By 1980, bus travel had acquired a real stigma,” Schwieterman says.

Most observers think the bus revival began in 2008 with the American arrival of the British company Megabus, which launched discount express service in the Midwest. (It has since expanded into California, the upper Northeast and, five months ago, Florida.) Megabus was soon followed by Boltbus, a competitor with similar service and routes, owned by Greyhound. Around the same time, Greyhound —the only remaining national bus company inAmerica, with 3,800 stops acros sthe continental United States and Canada—began amajor upgrade of its vehicles, adding legroom, wi-fi and electric sockets like the other companies.

“We?ve done a great deal to transform our brand, from new mobile websites to onboard amenities,” Greyhound spokeswoman Lanesha Gipson says. “We?ve improved an onboard experience that?s still safe, reliable and affordable.” But instead of carving up ever-smaller pieces of the same passenger pie, all the newcompetitors have expanded the bus-service market. Precise numbers are hard to come by because no federal agency collects statistics on bus travel, but Schwieterman estimates interstate buses carry about 70 million passengers a year.
“That?s way fewer than the airlines, but way more than the trains,” he says. “It?s a forceto be reckoned with.”

RedCoach?s traffic doesn?t count toward that total, because none of its routes stretch across Florida?s borders—yet.
“We want to add a few more cities within the state, butfor sure we plan to go outside Florida,” Cirigliano says. “The business has expanded much faster than we expected.”
So fast, in fact, that it triggered a domestic crisis. Her parents liked their 2010 visit to Florida so much that they bought a vacation condo here. Cirigliano used it when she came for the RedCoach launch, expecting to stay a few weeks. Four years later, she?s still there, along with a husband and, any day now, a baby.
“My mother was furious,” she recalls. “She told my father, „You promised me a condo for vacations, not to move my daughter out of the country.? But so far, they?re still married.”

REDCOACH: A DIFFERENT WAY TO TRAVEL

Inexpensive daily luxury travel to Florida’s most popular spots

MIAMI (Nov. 22, 2016) — RedCoach, the only luxury motor coach transportation service in Florida, offers a new way to travel that is comfortable and does not involve the high costs. Unlike other motor coach companies that offer 56 seats, RedCoach only offers 27 seats in first class and 38 seats on their business class.

RedCoach is redefining motor coach transportation by offering an upscale experience with unique features and amenities that guarantee a stress-free and comfortable ride. With free Wi-Fi, oversized reclining leather seats and on-demand movies, RedCoach allows riders to stay connected and multitask while on the road. Additionally, traveling on a motor coach can reduce the amount of cars on the road, and consequently reducing traffic, carbon emissions and fuel consumption. The Argentina-based company launched its U.S. routes in May of 2010, transporting passengers from Miami to Orlando and back. Since then, RedCoach has transported more than half a million passengers throughout Florida and has continued to grow, increasing its stops, services and passenger benefits.

Today, RedCoach offers more than 10 convenient stops in Florida’s most popular destinations including: Miami, Ft. Lauderdale, Tampa, Gainesville, Tallahassee and more. 6 Best Budget Bus Companies in the U.S.

They’re eco-conscious and tech-friendly. Some serve drinks. A few sell tickets for a buck. But the best reason to ride one of the new regional bus lines is as simple as two words: gas prices.

MEGABUS

Midwest & Northeast
Cities Served: 50+
Everything about Megabus is mega. The British brand’s blue double-decker fleet (each emblazoned with a smiling cartoon of a driver) now serves over 50 cities in the United States and Canada, making it the biggest player on the block.
If it were an airline, it would be: United Airlines
Contact Info: 877/462-6342, us.megabus.com

BOLTBUS
Northeast
Cities Served: 8
BoltBus is operated jointly by old-school Greyhound and Peter Pan, but it’s much hipper than its parents. For example, send a complaint via Twitter, and the issue will often be addressed by the techie team before you step off the bus.
If it were an airline, it would be: JetBlue Airlines
Contact Info: 877/265-8287, boltbus.com

$1 Tickets: Are They For Real?

Much like discount European airline Ryanair, America’s budget bus lines first grabbed the spotlight with shockingly low teaser fares. But it takes strategy (and luck) to land those rates; in fact, there’s often only one super-cheap seat per ride. The best rule: Book weeks in advance. Megabus and Tripper sell their $1 seats on a first-come basis, while BoltBus off-loads theirs on a random date to deter scalpers.

LUX BUS AMERICA
L.A., San Diego & Vegas
Cities Served: 4
Sure, Lux Bus offers door-to-door service between Southern California hotels. But the line’s bread and butter is its cushy L.A.–Vegas route: leather seats, free snacks, and free beer and wine so you can start the sin before you hit Sin City.
If it were an airline, it would be: Singapore Airlines
Contact Info: 877/610-7870, luxbusamerica.com

VAMOOSE
Northeast
Cities Served: 4
With service between New York and the D.C. metro area, Vamoose has options for any capital commuter. Senators can choose the $50-each-way Gold Bus (which has added legroom), while interns can pay with campus cash from local colleges.
If it were an airline, it would be: Delta Shuttle
Contact Info: 212/695-6766, vamoosebus.com

TRIPPER BUS
Northeast
Cities Served: 3
Tripper Bus, which runs between New York and the D.C. area, values loyalty: after buying 8 one-way trips, you’ll pick up a one-way for free. In addition, each ride includes one $1, one $5, and one $10 ticket—a steal for frequent buyers.
If it were an airline, it would be: Southwest Airlines
Contact Info: 877/826-3874, tripperbus.com

REDCOACH
Georgia & Florida
Cities Served: 16
Debuting last spring, RedCoach still has that new bus smell. And with only 27 business-class leather seats per coach—each reclines to 140 degrees—you’ll be relaxing in style. Consider it training for those sunny Florida beaches.
If it were an airline, it would be: Virgin America
Contact Info: 877/733-0724, redcoachusa.com

As any Floridian can tell you, travelling throughout the state can be painful and pricy. Whether you choose to brave the roadways by car or fly in a small, overcrowded plane, the experience is almost always unpleasant.

Now there is another alternative: RedCoach, a luxury motor coach transportation service that provides first-class comforts affordably and conveniently. The first express bus service to offer city center to city center travel, RedCoach provides travelers with amenities other businesses just can compete with.

Riders have two seating options when traveling on board one of RedCoach’s rigorously maintained motor coaches. First class seating features 27 seats with lap trays, while business class coach features 38 seats. Every oversized seat has an accompanying 110-volt individual power outlet and reclines into a bed, providing for great rest if you grow tired while enjoying the free Wi-Fi and on-demand movies. All passengers may check two bags of up to 50 pounds each for free, as well as a carry-on.

RedCoach offers 14 convenient stops in Florida’s most popular destinations including Miami International Airport, Fort Lauderdale, Fort Pierce, Gainesville, University of Florida, Naples, Ocala, Orlando, Downtown Tampa, University of South Florida, West Palm Beach, Downtown Tallahassee and Florida State University. Shuttle services from some of those stops, such as Orlando and MIA, are available to transport travelers to area hotels and popular tourist attractions like Universal Studios and Walt Disney Resorts. A family-owned business, RedCoach’s roots can be traced back 67 years to 1959 Argentina when Italian immigrant Nicola Cirgliano founded Grupo Plaza, a luxury transportation service that has since grown into the most successful and experienced motor coach business in the country. Every year, Grupo Plaza transports more than 180 million passengers throughout Argentina and Peru aboard its fleet of 1,700 luxury motor coaches. In 2010, his granddaughter Florencia Cirgliano brought the concept to Florida as RedCoach. More than half a million passengers have traveled with the company as it has continued to grow and increase its stops, services and passenger benefits.

“We selected Florida as our first location in the U.S. because we saw a major need for a new method of transportation here,” said Cirgliano. “Florida is one of the most difficult states to travel around in terms of public transportation, but it is also one of the most desirable destinations for travelers.”

Purchasing one-way or round-trip tickets is as simple as a few clicks on their easily navigable website, and the pricing is extremely competitive for what you get. Frequent travelers may also want to consider signing up with RedCoach’s loyalty program, RedRiders, which gives points towards benefits and discounts. Every dollar spent equals 10 RedRiders points and once you earn up to 5,000 points you can start exchanging them for free trips.

New stop brings students and locals affordable access to routes across Florida

Orlando, FL (9/26/18) – RedCoach, the only luxury motor coach transportation service in Florida, has partnered with Florida Gulf Coast University to provide affordable, long-distance transportation services to students, staff, faculty and residents of the area, opening up easier access to 7 cities throughout the state.

“We are very excited about this partnership with the University,” Florencia Cirigliano, VP of Marketing & PR at RedCoach said. “Some customers have been asking to have FGCU as a stop and the University immediately got on board because they believe that our service will be very important to connect with other institutions and cities. Fort Myers is a growing area and we appreciate the opportunity to serve this community who, until now, haven’t had too many public transportation options for traveling within Florida.”

This new route will start on October 3rd, increasing the company’s connectivity between the most important cities and universities in Florida. This route will make it possible for FGCU students and staff to travel directly to FSU, UF, and USF, and vice versa.

The new stop is about 30 minutes north of the current stop in Naples (which will be discontinued), and will be located at: 10501 FGCU Blvd S, Fort Myers, FL 33965 Parking Garage 2, where travelers can also take advantage of some convenient parking options.

This route will connect Fort Myers with Miami airport, Fort Lauderdale Airport, Tampa, Ocala, Gainesville and Tallahassee. The rates to these locations are as follows:

  • Fort Myers to Miami and Fort Lauderdale as low as $15
  • Fort Myers to Tallahassee as low as $55
  • Fort Myers to Tampa as low as $15
  • Fort Myers to Gainesville as low as $45

Dr James Michael Rollo, Senior Vice President for Strategy and Program Innovation at FGCU was also enthusiastic about this new addition, saying: “Our students do not currently have ready access to long-distance bus service, and this will provide support to over 5000 on-campus students.”

A Locals’ Guide to Miami

0
0

Miami is one of the most popular destinations in the world, with attractions for families, couples, and singles that range from world-class beaches to unique street galleries to amazing shopping districts.

Every year, more than 15 million people make their way to the city, just so they can experience all those world-famous attractions.

But what if that doesn’t quite appeal to you? You’ve already come this far, anyway, perhaps it’s the perfect opportunity to experience the cool local spots in Miami that aren’t tailored to tourists.

What do the locals do in Miami when they want to relax and have a good time? Where do they go that’s a little off the beaten path?

The options are almost endless, but if you were a local, chances are you’d spend some of your time at a few of these places.

1. Redland Market Village

“A little something for everyone” is a common phrase when people talk about attractions and destinations for travelers. However, it’s probably never been as true as it is when applied to Redland Market Village.

There is literally acres of merchandise to explore, and that’s before you even get around to the restaurants, food trucks, kids’ entertainment area, live music, and indoor farmer’s market. When you really want to find something unique, this is the first place to look.

It’s not exactly the flashiest place in Miami, but it’s exactly why the locals like it. It’s a simple (but huge), low-key, marketplace with, well, a little something for everyone.

2. Wat Buddharangsi Buddhist Temple

The Redlands is well-known throughout the area as a beautiful location, filled with vintage markets, nurseries, fruit stands, and much more. And that’s fine and worth the trip, but they’re missing some of the amazing cultural spots in the area.

Miami’s Theravada Buddhist temple opens its doors to everyone, giving them a chance to visit with the monks and discover more about their culture or just enjoy the peaceful setting.

3. Rouge in Miami Beach

Rouge was established a number of years ago by a chef who was determined to combine food and jazz music to create a completely unique experience. As soon as you arrive you’ll feel a definite sense of something classical about the venue, but mixed with the modern accoutrements that make your visit all the more enjoyable.

While it’s basically a French restaurant, the chef has combined plenty of flavors from Spain and Morocco to deliver something that has its own identity.

Where you really get a feel for the uniqueness of this place, though, is out in the courtyard. The aged bricks, the fireplace, and colorful plants blend together to create a warm and inviting location.

4. Sunset Harbour

This is where the South Beach locals like to hang out. It’s a small neighborhood that overlooks Biscayne Bay and is filled with a wide range of stores, bars, restaurants, and more. Once you park in the central parking lot, you can easily walk to all the best places in the neighborhood.

Feeling a little hungry? Then you may want to check out Pubbelly Sushi for something a little creative, or Icebox to treat yourself to some amazing cake by the slice. If you’re in the mood for a special drink, then the Purdy Lounge is a good choice for an elegant atmosphere, while Mac’s Club Deuce is the right choice if you prefer the complete opposite atmosphere.

And this is just the start. There are plenty of shops, gyms, yoga studios and much more scattered around the neighborhood.

5. Adrienne Arsht Center for the Performing Arts

Right in the heart of downtown Miami, you can experience some amazing music and performances at the Adrienne Arsht Center. Many legendary performers have delivered shows to remember here, but it also serves as a venue for local artists to make their debut.

There are nearly 400 different events happening here every year. They even have many programs and performances for children to enjoy. Many of them are free.

There’s even a nice restaurant here where you can enjoy some fine dining before or after the show or event.

6. Brickell/Downtown

Not a lot of people consider the business district of a city a “must see” on their vacation. However, the financial and business district of Miami is located right on Biscayne Bay, with the Miami River going straight through and separating Downtown from Brickell.

The whole area has been a popular destination for young professionals in the city. You can visit the Perez Art Museum or spend some time at the River Yacht Club, enjoying a drink or just taking in the sights and atmosphere around the river.

If you’re in the mood for shopping, be sure to check out the new open concept shopping mall Brickell City Centre or the Mary Brickell Village.

7. The Biltmore Hotel and the 19th Hole Sports Bar & Grill

The Biltmore Hotel is one of Miami’s largest historical landmarks, and it is one of the most well-known places in Coral Gables. Between the resort hotel and the beautiful golf course, it has become a popular location. What fewer people know, however, is that anyone can visit the grounds and enjoy some of the activities and attractions in the area.

For example, the 19th Hole Bar & Grill is a great place to enjoy some delicious food in a casual setting while trying a selection of “Brews of the World.” You can sit back and watch a game on one of the many televisions or just sit out on the terrace and watch the sunset.

A Local’s Guide to Orlando

Orlando, Florida is a highly toured city because of the many theme parks here but if you live here, you know there are so many other things to do. Orland from a local’s perspective is not all about the magic and sparkle, but instead about the local culture and experience. In this local’s guide to Orlando, stray from the beaten path with these amazing locations.

1. Farmers Market

Looking for ways to support local vendors and taste some homegrown fruits or vegetables? Check out the farmer’s markets around town.

One of the best things about Orlando is the climate that lends itself so well to grow a big variety of plants. With so many buying options, you won’t be disappointed in the selection.

Two great places to check out, are East End Market, open every day of the week, and the Winter Park Farmers Market, located in the old train depot every Saturday. Make it part of your weekend routine and meet plenty of other locals in the area.

2. Bar Hopping Downtown

Downtown Orlando is a place where people can get plenty of shopping and dining in during the weekdays and partying on the weekends. The social scene is one of the many highlights of going downtown. The temperatures are always pleasant in the evening, so a lot of people are out walking around, checking out all the different bars.

If you are looking for one localized street, Wall Street has a great offering of bars. It also features an alley that is perfect for pedestrians to walk in and out of, sampling all the different atmospheres and menus.

3. Tibet-Butler Nature Preserve

One great park to visit is the Tibet-Butler Nature Preserve. With 440 acres, visitors have plenty of area to spread out and enjoy the natural beauty of Florida.

In the late afternoon, the path is shady and offers a relaxing place to get your steps in or enjoy the quiet.

There are trails that cater to every crowd, with six varying options. Choose the path that is only ½ mile if you are in a hurry, or brought the kids with you. If you’re up for more of a challenge, take one of the trails that cover several miles.

If you watch carefully, you might just spot some wildlife favorites, like the gopher tortoises, bobcats, and even bald eagles.

4. Support the Local Sports Teams

There are a couple of options for watching local sports teams. The Orlando Magic are an obvious favorite, with plenty of games to watch during the basketball season.

Watch the UCF Knight football team at the Spectrum Stadium and see why it is called The Bouncehouse.

If soccer is more your vibe, watch an Orlando City Soccer Club game.

Let’s not forget that Daytona Beach is nearby too. For those who want to watch cars go around a big track at top speeds, there really is no better place to go.

Whatever your favorite spectator sport is, there are plenty of options in Orlando.

5. Harry P. Leu Gardens

Another great spot to observe nature is the Harry P. Leu Gardens. These botanical gardens are not a tourist hotspot, meaning you can just go and enjoy the beautiful rose bushes (over 1,000!) during the springtime.

If roses aren’t your thing, come see the largest collection of camellias in North America.

Beautiful fountains and walkways wind through a citrus grove and there is even a butterfly garden. While this garden may be on the smaller side with 50 acres, it highlights a lot of beautiful things about Orlando and is worth a visit at least once while you are here.

6. Dining

Orlando is a great place to taste your way around the city. There are so many great places to eat, but a few must-try places are Pharmacy, a trendy place with cool drinks and great food; The Ravenous Pig, a place that focuses on freshness and flavor; Orchid Thai Cuisine, for when you really need good Thai food; and Pom Pom’s Teahouse & Sandwicheria, a unique place to get sandwiches or try a lot of different types of tea.

Find your own favorites with so many cultures and styles of dining to choose from all packed into one big city.

There are so many touristy spots to eat, like Margaritaville and the Hard Rock Café, that you can stay away from or just eat at a few times a year.

7. Theme Parks

There really is no way to avoid going to some of the theme parks or attractions at least occasionally. Being a resident of Orlando means that you can get all kinds of discount passes, whether it is a discount card or deals on an annual membership.

If you are going to be here, you might as well enjoy some of the things that everyone loves to see from around the world.

The best benefit to having an annual pass to any of these locations is that you can find the less popular times to go, drop in for an evening or special event, and get additional discounts within the attractions.

A Local’s Guide to Tampa

0
0

If you are new to the area, welcome to Tampa! There are a lot of cool spots in Tampa, but sometimes you want to stay away from the tourists. While the popular spots are busy for a reason, there are plenty of great places that aren’t as well known. If you ever want to check out some great spots, here is Tampa, from a local’s perspective.

Enjoy the Sunshine

There is a reason that Florida is called the “sunshine state”. Get out and enjoy nature year-round when you live here. There are more than 170 parks in the area, many with playgrounds and water play areas.

Take a walk along the Tampa Riverwalk.

Check out the views of the minarets at the University of Tampa.

Need more nature? Stroll through 7 acres of developed gardens or 6 to 9 acres of natural greenbelt at the USF Botanical Gardens.

If you’re going to get out on the water, skip the expensive river cruise. You can take a $5 ride with the Tampa Water Taxi Company. While it isn’t enjoying the sunshine, taking it at night is especially enchanting with the illuminated skyline in the background.

Become a Sports Fan

There are four major sports teams in the area; the Rays (MLB), Lightning (NHL), Rowdies (United Soccer League), and the Buccaneers (NFL). Buying season tickets to any of these teams is a great idea, but there are more affordable ways to see the games too. Watch the coupon sites, you can get a good deal.

The local minor league team, the Tampa Yankees, play at the GMS Field. Their games are fun to watch and don’t cost as much money, but a big perk to having this field is that it is also the New York Yankee’s spring training field.

Not into any of the major league sports teams? There are still plenty of college teams in the area too.

Great Places to Eat

There are many different cultures in Tampa, all of them with their own great restaurants. Some great places to add to your must-try list are:

  • La Teresita: some of the best Cuban food
  • Publix Subs: you guessed it, they serve sub sandwiches
  • Datz: great American food
  • Dough: specialty donuts you thought only existed in your dreams

Ybor City

While there are bound to be some tourists here, you can’t be a resident of Tampa and not know its history. The golden age in Ybor was from the late 1800s until the Great Depression. There were cigar factories, restaurants, and a thriving city full of immigrants.

During the Depression, the population moved on and Ybor nearly became a ghost town. It is undergoing a major revitalization, becoming a great place to spend some time.

While great food is definitely a draw, there is a thriving nightlife. There are shopping centers, craft beers, theaters, and even vintage cigar shops, as a nod to the history of the city.

Local Culture

Some of the best-kept secrets that locals enjoy are all the local culture perks. There are farmer’s markets almost every weekend with some of the best produce you’ll find because of the great growing seasons in Florida.

Want to stay fit with friends? Join a group doing yoga in the park on Sundays.

There are also food festivals, local music events, and tournaments on the beach.

As you start visiting the beaches and downtown areas, you will learn the peak times for traffic and best times that you can avoid the crowds. Once you get down the schedule like a local, you will find ways to truly enjoy the beauty of the city.

Nightlife

There are a lot of bars and clubs at nighttime. Making the rounds downtown with a group of friends is a fun way to spend an evening. Some of the best bars to try are Cigar City Brewery and Wet Willies. You can go downtown and stop by Franklin Manor and Four Green Fields. If you’re headed over to Ybor, you have many more options, including Double Decker and Gaspars.

If alcohol isn’t your scene, there are plenty of late-night places to try with specialty ice cream, donuts, and varied desserts you can get a fix for your sweet tooth.

Family Activities

While the theme parks are always a highlight for kids and teenagers, there are other fun activities for families. Some of the more popular family attractions are:

  • The Lowry Park Zoo
  • Florida Aquarium (check out the splash pad)
  • Glazer Children’s Museum

If you are looking for something different, the Big Cat Rescue, where there are more than 80 different cats, including lions, tigers, leopards, jaguars, and cheetahs. Orphaned and injured cats are brought to this sanctuary, so the variety can change between trips.

Another fun place for families is the Tampa Bay History Center. They have a theater with a choose-your-own-adventure feature and fun exhibits for pirates and treasure seekers.

A Local’s Guide to Tallahassee

Tallahassee is a great place to live. It has great weather year-round and the people are interesting and nice. With a local’s perspective to Tallahassee, you really come to learn the hidden gems of the city. Looking for guidance on places to see? Here are some of the cool local spots in Tallahassee.

1. Stop by Lofty Pursuits

The weather is almost always nice in Tallahassee, which means ice cream is enjoyed all year long. If you are looking for the best place to get ice cream, Lofty Pursuits is the place to go. It’s a local favorite because of the variety of flavors, but also the quality of the ice cream.

Just so you know, choose your flavor carefully. There are some flavors that will turn your mouth bright blue, which isn’t always ideal in social situations, like a first date. If you have friends or kids with you though and blue mouths are what you’re after, order freely.

2. The Downtown GetDown

This Tallahassee tradition has been going on for years and is done to mark the beginning of the FSU football season. This party is basically the most epic pre-game party and people show up in the masses. It is such a big, popular event that streets are shut down to host the crowds.

Local bands will come and play sets while party-goers sample the large variety of food from local hot spots. This is an event you won’t forget, so bring your friends, wear your FSU gear, and get ready to celebrate one of the greatest sports nights in town.

3. Landis Green Bench

A fun local spot surrounded with stories of love is the Landis Green Bench or the “kissing bench”. All through the Florida State University campus, there are benches placed. On the edge of Landis Green, you will see this stone bench with a sign that reads, “If this bench could talk/ oh the stories it would tell/ of kisses young and old/ if you sit, beware the spell.”

Students have used this bench for kissing after it was originally started by a professor and his wife, looking for a place to go to kiss, or “canoodle”. The rhyme suggests that many other couples have had similar fates on the bench, creating an interesting tradition.

4. The Festivals

The Holy Mother of God Greek Orthodox Church holds a Greek festival to celebrate the Greek culture of Tallahassee. This event is a big deal and one you don’t want to miss. There is a lot of amazing Greek food, including all the classics you’d expect, like spanakopita, baklava, and plenty of tzatziki, with some unexpected treasures mixed in.

There is Greek dancing and plenty of people in costume too. Even if you don’t want to fully immerse in the experiences, you’ll have fun watching others get into it.

Another popular festival is the Swamp Stomp music festival, where you can enjoy food, art, and of course, music. This festival is put on by the Tallahassee Museum and is meant to celebrate the true swampland, Tallahassee.

5. Sports Teams

The FSU Football team isn’t the only sports team in town. Aside from other various indoor football teams, there is rugby, roller derby, and ice hockey. The Conquistadors are the local Rugby Football Club and they are good. The city provides good support and has even seen the Conquistadors go undefeated.

The RollerGirls are the roller derby team and they are tough. What’s better is that they donate a good portion of their proceeds to charity, so you feel good about going to watch women fight on wheels.

If hockey is more your thing, come support the Tallahassee Tiger Sharks. They are the local minor professional team and always play a good game.

6. Historical Sites

We are proud of our state history. Whether you choose to visit one of the Missions, St. Marks lighthouse, one of the many museums, the Black Archives, or an archaeological park, there is a deep and rich history here. From explorers venturing around the state to the vast Native American history here, Florida has a big backstory.

Add into it that Tallahassee was the temporary Union headquarters while Abraham Lincoln gave the Emancipation Proclamation here, and it just gets better. The locals are so proud of these historical events and more. If you want to really immerse yourself into the culture, it’s a good idea to learn some of that history.

7. Enjoy Abundant Wildlife

There are many wildlife refuges that people can visit in the area. You might want to invest in a pair of binoculars and learn the local birds or find out when the great Monarch migration stops here on their way to Mexico (it’s October).

Typically, the only animals that people think are interesting in Florida are alligators, but there is a wide variety of birds, reptiles, insects, and animals that live in the swampy areas of Tallahassee that are also fun to see. Not all parks and refuges cost money either. Many offer free or discount days if they charge, so look into your options before scheduling a visit.

Gainesville, Florida is home to the University of Florida, but there is a lot more to this bit of the Sunshine State. Gainesville from a local’s perspective is even more amazing than as a tourist. If you want to experience Gainesville, and I mean really experience it, then here are things you should check out Gainesville from a local’s perspective.

1. Union Street Farmers Market

Florida has a climate that caters to many different types of fruits and vegetables that can’t be grown in other areas of the United States. With a growing season that lasts all year long, the farmers’ markets are always a fun, treasure trove of goodness.

This market is one of the best around and happens every Wednesday, no matter the weather. There is more available than just fresh grown produce too, including succulents, gifts, snacks, and crafts for sale.

Be forewarned: don’t come here in a hurry. You will want to take time to wander from tent to tent checking out all the offerings.

2. Check Out the Local Bars

As with other big cities, the nightlife in Gainesville is a fun part of the culture. Two of the coolest bars that the locals love are Rockey’s Dueling Piano Bar and The Arcade Bar.

Rockey’s is a unique bar that combines specialty drinks with an entertaining take on piano music. The talented pianists are showcased on stage, performing requests from the audience on the spot. The audience involvement is what really makes the bar fun, so don’t hold back.

The other bar, The Arcade Bar, is another unique stop. Spend the night with friends, showing off your gaming skills. With three floors, there is plenty of room to spread out and try different games while sampling different types of drinks.

3. Union Street Station

For a unique shopping experience, try the Union Street Station. There is something for everyone, it seems. Music lovers can look through vinyl records or listen to up and coming local musicians. Art lovers can find a home in the galleries. Fashionistas find unique styles for every aesthetic.

Perusing the shops here is an experience and showcases a lot of the culture in Gainesville.

4. The Cade Museum

One of Gainesville’s claim to fame is that Gatorade was invented here, by Dr. Cade. To honor the innovation, creativity, and entrepreneurship involved, the Cade Museum was created. There are many creative exhibits here that highlight art and science.

Even more fun is the exciting programs and events that are offered for visitors of all ages. Check the website for the most current classes to see what interests you the most. These classes help encourage all kinds of innovation and get members thinking about how they can stretch themselves and use their own talents and thoughts to create something awesome.

5. Local Festivals

One of the most popular local festivals is the Gainesville Art Festival, or Gainesville Downtown Festival and Art Show. This single event attracts more than 100,000 people each year and is great for the whole family to attend. The historic downtown area is covered in art, music, and entertainment with free concerts and dance performances.

Art activities for children that help encourage imagination and skill are great for the younger crowd while the sidewalk chalk art is eye candy for all visitors. Enjoy all the different activities like making masks and designing puppets, or just stroll around admiring everything while tasting all the different types of food offered.

All different styles of art are available for purchase from paintings to art, ceramics, and jewelry.

6. Matheson History Museum

Gainesville is a city rich in history and the Matheson History Museum is one of the best at featuring it. Visitors are taken through time to see the significant history of the area. Exhibits are well curated, designed to raise discussion and give context to past events.

The museum also features rotating exhibits so those who visit more than once (aka locals) are always treated to something new.

7. Experience the Culture

There are many different cultures combined in Gainesville, just like the rest of the state. Locals love to sample all the varied food styles spread through the town.

Another way to immerse yourself in the culture is through The 352 Walls project. Art is painted through the city on walls, buildings, and parks to highlight the skill of local artists. Each is vibrant and has its own unique style.

Look at the website for a list of the artwork around town and even download a map. With 352 murals, there is more to see than vacationers can usually fit in, which is why it is great to experience this as a local.
